Weight-loss: find the right resources to lose weight safely
Since everyone is unique, with a different metabolism, it is important to remember that the efforts made to reach an optimal weight will not be the same for each person. Adopting a healthy lifestyle may seem difficult at first, but a health care team can support you and help you change your lifestyle, one step at a time.
Set up the right habits
- Be realistic with your goals. Trying to do too much too soon can reduce your motivation or even cause you to injure yourself. Weight loss is possible over a reasonable period (at least three to six months) and should not exceed 0.5kg or one to two pounds per week.
- Don’t miss meals. Your body will also attempt to trick you into eating higher calorie foods to compensate, which often results in unhealthy choices.
- Get a healthy amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation can interfere with weight management and affect your energy levels, motivation, and decision making.
- Keep your motivation up! Remind yourself why you’re losing weight—maybe it’s for health reasons, to set a good example for your kids, or to feel better in your favourite outfit. When you reach a small goal, celebrate your steps.
Know when to ask for help
Your family physician: Excess weight is associated with many health conditions as well as increased stress on your body. Talk to your doctor before starting any new weight-loss regime to make sure it does not adversely affect your health or conflict with any medications.
A dietitian or nutritionist: Dietitians help you address personal nutritional goals or challenges. A dietitian can be an important part of a weight loss process because they specialize in keeping you healthy and well nourished.
A Health Coach: Embedded within your ASSOCIUM Benefits, you have access to FREE Health Coaching Services offered by Novus Health. Health Coaching helps you manage health conditions, like obesity or excess weight, that may be impacting your day-to-day life by using customized and compassionate 1:1 support with a nurse.
